Factors affecting the extent of e-procurement use in small and medium enterprises in New Zealand

Ms Hassan explored the factors affecting the breadth (extent to which an organisation takes advantage of available e-procurement functionalities) and depth (extent to which an organisation relies on e-procurement) of e-procurement use. Her research model was based on the technology-organisation-environment (TOE) framework, diffusion of innovation (DOI) theory, and prior research on e-procurement adoption and use. The model was tested against empirical data collected using a survey of 1,000 small and medium enterprises in the New Zealand manufacturing industry. Ms Hassan found that the breadth and depth of e-procurement use are affected by different factors, suggesting that neither breadth of e-procurement use nor the existence of use alone adequately capture the state of e-procurement practice. However, support for using DOI theory in the context of explaining e-procurement use was mixed; of the factors derived from DOI theory (relative advantage, compatibility, and complexity) only relative advantage and compatibility had an effect.
