Associate Professor Susanne Roehr PhD

Associate Professor in Psychology

Doctoral Supervisor
School of Psychology

The potential for dementia prevention is huge: current evidence suggests that 40 to 50 percent of all late life dementia could be prevented if we were able to eliminate certain risk factors. My line of research explores how to best maximize the enormous room for improvement in a fair and democratic way, i.e. by paying particular attention to socially disadvantaged and marginalized populations and around how socioeconomic inequities are associated with lifestyle for brain health. Overall, the aims are (I) to inform public health policy towards creating more equitable environments for healthy ageing and risk reduction of cognitive decline and dementia as well as (II) to develop and evaluate complex programs for individual brain health promotion to reduce risk for cognitive decline and dementia.

My work focuses on epidemiology and public health research in healthy ageing and age-related brain health, primarily utilizing population-based cohort studies (e.g. NZWHR, AgeCoDe/AgeQualiDe, LEILA75+, LIFE, TILDA, SHARE/HRS/SAGE). Objective is identifying modifiable health and lifestyle risk factors for cognitive decline and dementia as well as their individual and combined contribution to cognition-related brain health in old age. Moreover, I am particularily interested in social and environmental determinants of brain health, i.e. which and how contextual factors (e.g. education, income, gross domestic product, built environment, nature and climate) determine lifestyle behaviours known to be associated with cognitive decline and dementia.

Project Title: Strategising research on population-level dementia risk reduction approaches in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally

The project aims to establish collaborations within Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) and internationally to advance research on population-level approaches to dementia risk reduction (PLADRR), i.e. leveraging world-leading PLADRR expertise to address the high prevalence of modifiable dementia risk factors in NZ, particularly among M膩ori and Pacific peoples. Halving certain risk factors could reduce dementia prevalence by 18%, potentially saving NZ$450m annually. PLADRR focuses on reducing dementia risk factors across populations by promoting healthy environments, leading to unconscious behavioral change. The importance of PLADRR is increasingly emphasised as individual-level lifestyle trials against dementia have yet to demonstrate benefits. Dr. Sebastian Walsh (University of Cambridge) and Professor Kaarin Anstey (UNSW Sydney) lead the international PLADRR Research Group, which includes global experts in dementia epidemiology and public health and is linked to the WHO Brain Health working group. They have pioneered studies and proposed models for population-level dementia prevention. The project will form a novel partnership with them and in NZ between 黑料网, HART dementia researcher Associate Professor Susanne R枚hr, and the University of Auckland's Impact of Dementia mate wareware and Equity in Aotearoa (IDEA) team member and old age psychiatrist Dr Etuini Ma'u. This collaboration aims to (1) leverage PLADRR expertise for NZ, (2) contribute insights from NZ鈥檚 unique demographic and socioeconomic landscape, and (3) secure international funding for sustained collaboration. Building on evidence of high and disproportionate risk factors for dementia in NZ, this new collaboration with PLADRR is a logical step towards effective and equitable dementia prevention. The grant will support two strategic activities: a three-day PLADRR workshop in Auckland in February 2025, and a visit by the NZ delegation to Cambridge Public Health and WHO in August 2025.

Project Title: Co-exploring dementia risk reduction from a planetary health perspective

Dementia risk reduction focuses on individual health and lifestyle factors, e.g., physical activity, diet, social engagement, and cardiovascular disease management. However, interventions targeting such factors report no or small benefits for cognition. The reductionist emphasis on the individual without considering the environment misses crucial chances for effective dementia risk reduction. Importantly, with climate change, such isolated strategies are no longer appropriate. Therefore, objective is to co-explore enriched dementia risk reduction strategies from a planetary health perspective - the understanding that human health depends on flourishing natural systems and stewardship of these natural systems. How to shift the narrative from "good for the heart, good for the brain鈥 to a holistic 鈥済ood for the environment, good for the brain鈥? The project will utilize photovoice: Older citizen scientists photo-document their livelihoods, lifestyles and interactions with their environment to co-evaluate room for sustainable conditions and behaviors - good for brain and environment.
