In March 2020 Galbraith became Director Postgraduate for the College of Creative Arts, and she is the College's representative on the Doctoral Research Committee. From Feb 2010- Feb 2015 Galbraith was Head of Whiti o Rehua School of Art. She currently supervises MFA and PhD candidates, and teaches into the first year of the MFA and guest lectures into the BFA. Professor Galbraith was previously Senior Curator Art at Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Senior Curator City Gallery Wellington, and inaugural Director/Curator of St. Paul ST Gallery, AUT University, Auckland.

Galbraith spent twelve years based in London where she undertook postgraduate studies in curatorial practice at Goldsmiths College London, and worked as Exhibitions Organiser for seven years at Camden Arts Centre.

Galbraith has had extensive experience with the New Zealand at the Venice Biennale project. In 2009 she was co-curator for Francis Upritchard's 'Save Yourself' and 2009 Deputy Commissioner, she was part of the selection panel for 2011 and 2013 National representations, Deputy Commissioner for Bill Culbert 'Front Door Out Back' in 2013 and Commissioner for Simon Denny 'Secret Power' in 2015. 

In 2015 Gabraith initiated and led the national gathering of tertiary art educators at Art School of the Future, at the College of Creative Arts Toi Rauwharangi.  

Galbraith was Managing Curator of SCAPE Public Art in 艑tautahi/Christchurch 2016, 2017, 2018.

Heather Galbraith is a contemporary art curator, writer, and Professor of Fine Arts, College of Creative Arts Toi Rauwh膩rangi. She is Director Postgraduate for the College overseeing all Masters and Doctoral programmes offered by the College. Her teaching focus is on PhD and Masters supervisions. She is Chair of Contemporary HUM Arts Trust, the governance structure of www.contemporaryHUM.com an online platform for commisioned writing about New Zealand visual arts presented internationally.

Research Interests

Recent research projects have included curating exhibitions including Zines aus Neuseeland, Weltkulturen Museum, Frankfurt (2012, co-curated with Bryce Galloway), Tender is the Night, City Gallery Wellington (2011), Ready to Roll, City Gallery Wellington (2010), and off-site projects such as Amy Howden Chapman's The Flood, My Chanting for One Day Sculpture (2010), Courtenay Place Light Box projects Give Us a Sign and Marie Shannon: Love Notes (2008 & 2009). In 2009 Galbraith was co-curator of Francis Upritchard's Save Yourself at the Venice Biennale, and Deputy Commissioner for the NZ at Venice project in the same year. In 2013 she was Deputy Commisisoner of Bill Culbert's Front Door Out Back, and in 2015 Commissioner for Simon Denny's Secret Power, also within the Venice Biennale. In 2015 she curated Trigger Points, at the Palitz Gallery, Syracuse University, Manhattan, NY. She was Managing Curator for SCAPE Public Art in 艑tautahi/Christchurch in 2016, 2017 and 2018. 

Galbraith regularly writes about art and artists for exhibition catalogues, monographs, journals and magazines, and is an experienced editor. She has a strong interest in art publishing, artists books, editions and ephemera. She also serves on various advisory boards and selection panels relating to art and culture.

Galbraith was a member of the Creative and Performing Arts PBRF assessment panel in 2018. Currently she is appointed by Creative New Zealand as an Arts Peer Assessor, and a Peer Assessor for the ARC, Australila.
