Project Title: Robust volcanic eruption forecasts: leveraging magmatic speedometry into geophysical monitoring

The key question asked of a volcano monitoring agency is 鈥淲hen will the volcano erupt?鈥 While it is possible to determine whether a volcano is in a state of unrest, it is very difficult to forecast an imminent eruption based on geophysical monitoring signals alone. We will use petrography and geochemistry to decipher magmatic processes that are preserved within erupted material, as crystals and volcanic glass or groundmass reflect a history of growth within a variable (pressure, temperature, chemical, etc.) magmatic environment. We have recently demonstrated that these magma-speedometric methods allow the quantification of rates and timing of events leading to former explosive eruptions, as well as informing the geometry of the respective plumbing systems. In this project we will extend these insights to effusive eruptions, providing geophysical monitoring experts with knowledge about how the entire subvolcanic plumbing system operates. We will combine this field-leading knowledge with seismic and ground deformation observations that signal magma movement at depth. Building models will enhance scientific understanding of how seismicity and deformation are modulated by variations in volume, depth, and conduit geometry during magma ascent, and how these signals change over time as magma ascends from great depth to the surface. High-resolution geochemical information gained from deposits of previous eruptions will provide the boundary conditions for these models. Combining the models with future real-life geophysical observations during periods of volcanic unrest will allow rapid interpretation to identify timing, size, and style of potential eruptions. This method will be directly applied to monitoring of New Zealand鈥檚 volcanoes and incorporated into the GeoNet project. The outcomes of this work will protect the lives of people and the long-term livelihoods of stakeholders in volcanically active areas.

Project Title: Water in spinel: a robust hygrometer for the Earth and Planetary Sciences

The amount and distribution of water trapped within minerals influence the dynamics of the Earth and other planetary bodies, including convective processes within their interiors. Water also controls the melting behaviour of rocks, and thus has a profound impact on the genesis of magmas. In turn, water dissolved in magmas determines their viscosity, crystallisation behaviour, and volume expansion during ascent at the onset of volcanic eruptions. Estimating the water content of minerals and magmas (hygrometry) is thus of critical importance in the Earth and Planetary Sciences. However, existing hygrometers are often compromised by hydrogen diffusion, or by the lack of constraints on physical or chemical boundary conditions. We have recently discovered water in spinels, a group of oxide minerals that are abundant in many rocks. Preliminary data indicate that hydrogen diffusion is minimal. We will quantify the water content in spinels and the parameters that influence water uptake into their crystal structures. This will allow us to develop a robust hygrometer, through which we will determine magmatic water cycles through space and time on Earth, and provide opportunities for investigating the water budgets of the Earth, Mars, Moon, and other planetary objects to advance our knowledge of planetary dynamics.

Project Title: Mitigating volcanic hazards through advanced technologies

The key question asked of a volcano monitoring agency is: "When will the volcano erupt?" This question is very difficult to answer, because the interpretation of monitoring signals requires a good understanding of the magmatic processes that lead to an eruption. Here we take advantage of the record of these processes preserved in previously erupted materials in the form of crystals grown in the magma, within a variable (pressure, temperature, chemical etc.) environment. Using high resolution analysis, it is possible to forensically examine these variations, and combined with experimentally determined element diffusion rates, we will be able to quantitatively determine the rates and timing of events that led to the eruption. This project will employ advanced secondary ion mass spectrometry methods at the Isotope Imaging Laboratory at the University of Hokkaido to image and quantify the chemical variations within crystals and between crystals and surrounding volcanic glass, to decipher crystal growth and resorption histories. In doing so, we will be able to constrain the storage history and ascent rates of magma before the onset of explosive volcanic eruptions. The results from this work will be directly applicable to the applied monitoring of New Zealand's volcanoes and incorporated into the GeoNet project. Such high-resolution analysis of a wide range of major and trace elements in submicrometer detail, as well as providing quantitative measurements of isotopic composition for precise geochronological work, is unique worldwide. This will be the first time that a team of New Zealand based experts in geochemical methods to characterize volcanic hazards gains access to this powerful set of tools. The project will strengthen existing contacts between New Zealand based scientists and colleagues in Japan, especially at the University of Hokkaido, and will provide a foundation for many years of productive international collaboration in the interest of public safety

Project Title: Dynamics of magma ascent beneath New Zealand's subduction zone volcanoes: implications for hazard mitigation strategies

Hazard mitigation strategies at subduction zone volcanoes critically depend on knowledge of magma ascent processes and rates. Two diametrically opposite scenarios have been debated in recent years: 1. Protracted sub-liquidus magma ascent and evolution through crystal growth and fractionation in crustal reservoirs that are tapped during volcanic eruptions. This represents the long-standing paradigm of subvolcanic magma chambers characterized by cooling and occasional recharge with new melts. 2. Rapid decompression of evolved mantle melts from the crust-mantle boundary to the surface under super-liquidus conditions, with crystals in the process of dissolving. In the latter model, hydrous melts traverse the Earth's crust to reach the surface within hours to days. Their rapid ascent initially results in superheating, because these melts cannot degas before reaching upper crustal levels. Which of these scenarios best explains subduction zone volcanism on Earth? We will characterize the geochemical signature of melt boundary layers at crystal-melt interfaces and thereby determine if crystals were in the process of growing or dissolving at the onset of volcanic eruptions. In the case of crystal growth, the melt boundary layer will be depleted in mineral-forming chemical components; in the case of crystal dissolution, this layer will become enriched in such components. To quantify crystal dissolution rates, we will conduct dissolution experiments using piston cylinders to subject crystal-bearing hydrous melts to superliquidus temperatures. We will then compare the experimental results to data from natural samples from New Zealands active volcanoes. This will allow us to quantify magma ascent processes and rates in nature.

Graduate Supervision Statement

I consider doctoral students as junior colleagues, who I can support through my many years of research experience. Within my team, all members are benefitting from the shared enthusiam for pushing the frontiers of scientific understanding in the Earth and Planetary Sciences, supported by a combination of bright ideas and hard work.

My research interests include all areas of igneous petrology and geochemistry, with a focus on microanalytical techniques to answer large-scale questions on the rates of magmatic processes, and how volatiles and other factors impact magma generation, ascent, storage, and volcanic eruption. I am striving for integration of several geoscientific disciplines to gain reliable insights, in collaboration with domestic and international colleagues, and funded through domestic and international research grants.

I am operating under the Volcanic Risk Solutions policy to accept into my team only those candidates who are fully funded through doctoral scholarships and are thus able to devote their time and attention to conduct research. However, I encourage all of my students to also participate in the activities offered by the Graduate Research School, which support doctoral candidates in developing into independent researchers, becoming successful within and beyond their specific research project.

Due to my involvement in international collaboration, I am generally away from Massey for a few months per year, often accompanied by some of my doctoral students, who are typically co-supervised by international colleagues. For this reason, I am normally not available for Masters supervision, although I can make exceptions for particularly promising candidates, who are committed in their ambition to move on to doctoral studies following their MSc graduation.

I normally encourage potential candidates to contact me by email to discuss research projects and research funding that may be available, especially those who have managed to secure their own funding and have ideas for conducting interesting research projects in my field, which I might be able and happy to support. However, as I will be leaving 黑料网 in February 2025, I am no longer able to accept any students at this point in time. Opportunities may open up at my new place of employment in mid-2025.

Prof Georg Zellmer FHEA is not currently available for Masters or Doctoral supervision.
