Dr Arshad Javed Bachelor, Master, MSc Economics, MSc Real Estate Manageme, PhD, AFHEA
Senior Lecturer in Property
Doctoral Supervisor School of Economics and FinanceDr Javed research and teaching interests lie in the area of property management and development, property finance and investment, property valuation, construction management, construction health and safety, construction productivity and industry development, value management, ageing housing, public private partnership, research methods in property and construction management. He has undertaken research projects for Construction Industry Council and Public Policy Research Fund of Hong Kong. Prior to joining 黑料网, he was working as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering of The University of Hong Kong and at the Department of Building and Real Estate, Faculty of Construction and Environment of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HK PolyU), Hong Kong, China. He obtained his PhD in 2013 at the Department of Building & Real Estate of HK PolyU. He pursued his Master of Science in Economics degree from University of Skövde, Sweden in 2008 and he was awarded a Master of Science in Real Estate Management degree from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm Sweden in 2010. He has published articles in a number of journals including ASCE, Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities, International Journal of Strategic Property Management, Construction Management and Economics, Journal of Built Environment Project and Asset Management, Facilities, Facilities Management, Engineering, Construction and Architectural Management etc. He is also on the reviewer board of these journals.
Dr Javed is Director of the Real Estate Analysis Unit (REAU) at the School of Economics and Finance, 黑料网, New Zealand. His research and teaching interests lie in the area of construction and property management. By using his multidisciplinary background, he has expanded his research to property finance and investment, property valuation, transit-oriented development, intergenerational wealth and housing tenure, urban regeneration, land banking, housing inequality and affordable housing. He has a track-record of producing high quality research outputs. Dr Javed’s research outputs address several challenges and provide solutions and recommendations to policy makers and industry.

Teaching and Supervision
Teaching Statement
My teaching philosophy is to provide informative and enthusiastic lectures in a supportive and friendly learning atmosphere. I always try to awake the curious mind through an enjoyable discussion at the end of each lecture. I also gain great satisfaction and enjoyment from my role as a teacher to see students grow in confidence in their ability to tackle problems, determine answers and in confidence to put forward alternative ideas. I have continuously improved research-led teaching, appropriate usage of real-life applications, approachability and professionalism in teaching style. I performed excellently in the last few semesters, during the unique and unprecedented period of the COVID-19 lockdown, which highlights not only my flexibility and resilience, but ability to adapt in challenging circumstances. I was also able to modify assessments that fits the University compliance requirements.
For adult learners, I am applying four principles of andragogy as proposed by Malcolm Knowles (2015). Since some of my students are adults’ learners and they can be better engaged in a problem-centered context with real-world relevance, so I am adding context to my given exercises to increase their engagement and ease of learning. I also recognised that not all students prefer self-directed learning, and that current learning approaches suggest that incorporating debates and critical questioning, coupled with visual media help improve overall comprehension. Considering this, I plan my lessons to help cater to varying learning tendencies. I start my lectures with a discussion of newspaper article or YouTube clip about commercial/residential property market trends and/or home affordability/rental reports etc.

For the last decade, my research focus is in the area of construction and property management, however due to my multidisciplinary educational and research background I have expanded my research work to include property finance and investment, property valuation, transit-oriented development, intergenerational wealth and housing tenure, urban regeneration, land banking and affordable housing.
