Current Projects

Project Title: Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua: Translating Mātauranga ǰ, usefully applied in the past, to enhance recovery trajectories in the future.

Aotearoa experiences diverse catastrophes, notably the Covid-19 pandemic, yet the country’s disaster recovery strategies are under-developed, Eurocentric, and de-contextualised. Historically, Mātauranga ǰ-led recovery approaches have proved highly effective. However, formal recovery practices are uninformed by ǰ perspectives and may undermine community restoration through exacerbating inequities. Our kaupapa ǰ research is co-created with ǰ partners, framed by ǰ narrative theory and draws ideas from disaster and public health sciences to explore the interface of mātauranga ǰ and disaster recovery. We will advance ǰ aspirations for recovery knowledge and capabilities, as well as inspire innovation in theory, research, policy and practice by: (1) transforming ǰ disaster recovery through reconceptualising mātauranga ǰ, and translating new insights into seminal recovery resources; (2) theorising a strengths-based ǰ recovery law that presents solutions for addressing inequities, and unequal access to recovery assets; (3) creating original cross-cultural theory development in public health and disaster risk reduction science; (4) leading ǰ interdisciplinary research capability development in disaster recovery; (5) enhancing disaster recovery legislation and policy in Aotearoa. Leveraging the team’s networks will ensure that findings invigorate ǰ, disaster recovery, and public health initiatives locally, while encouraging similar endeavours by other Indigenous Peoples, and nations with value-based cultures, globally.
